Waldron Punch & Die Sets
Posted by piperjoe on Friday, December 5, 2008 10:13 AM

Received my Waldron Punch & Die Sets yesterday, both the Precision set and the Sub-Miniature set, and I have to say I am very impressed with the tooling involved.  Forgot to order the toolmaker's mallet so will be going shopping for that in a bit.  These sets are very nice and I can't believe how small of a punch is included in the Sub-Miniature set...down to .018!!  How in the heck would you glue those wee punched pieces to the model??  All suggestions and comments from those familiar with this product would be welcome as I want to keep these tools around for a long time.  Thanks!

I ordered the Waldron sets from Roll Models, Inc. via their website and I was very surprised at the speedy delivery and great packaging by this company.  It was my first order with them and I can vouch that it won't be my last.  They even included their 144 page catalog listing so I can have a nice source for model items.  Nice job Roll Models. Inc.!

Roll Models acquired the Waldron line a while back...it was one of those product lines that would have disappeared if someone hadn't picked it up. I too purchased a set...I just use a small piece of scrap wood to tap the punch. I'd be too temped to use a mallet on the model that isn't going as smoothly as expected.Evil [}:)]

Hadn't thought about just using a piece of wood for a mallet...um..where DID that 2X4 scrap Oak go to...(just kidding!)  Thanks for the advise.   I fully understand the "mallet on the model" statement; I have a Calvin comic over my R/C build table that shows him using a hammer on a plane and afterward saying it's anti-aircraft fire to HobbsSmile,Wink, & Grin [swg].....

Do you just slip plastic cut into strips between the metal and clear piece and have at it?  And do you find you have to tap the tool very hard to work well?

I use it for everything from making masks from masking tape...clear lenses from acytate, metal discs from foil and aluminum sheet to cutting out holes in styrene or dials from decal sheets. Depends on the thicknesses...but usually just a good quick rap drives the punch through cleanly.

Joe - what works for me is I have pieces of waxpaper cut into 2" squares that I can tape down on my building mat. On these squares I add a drop of liquid cement or CA and smear it around with a toothpick making  it very thin. I will take the little disk with my best tweezers and touch the disk to the cement and stick it in place.  Hint have several disk on hand as the tweezer snap can really make them fly. I have also lucked out by using a round toothpick sanded flat on one end and wetting the blunt end with saliva (stick it to your tounge) and using it to pick up small parts.

Thanks guys for the hints on how to use this set.  Hey, I didn't know they had a hex punch set...I can see where that would be useful.

Thanks for the hex punch set information.  After reading the review I believe it is easier to just slice the hex pieces off plastic hex stock with a thin razor blade.  And less expensive, too Smile [:)].

Don't know if they still have them in their line, but at one time Historex had a hexagonal punch set.

Thanks, Ron.  It would be nice have both the hex set and the rivet set....but....I think I'll stick to the 'ole "salami slice" routine for now.

I'm looking for the old Waldron Punch hex set, now by Roll Models. Inc, but am having troubles finding this product on their web site .. if indeed I found the correct site. Could someone please post the correct link to this punch set?
