I must apologize about booth venting
Posted by namrednef on Saturday, December 13, 2008 9:17 AM

Having posted hard air moving facts....I looked into it further.

I delved into this very deeply. While a 6 inch vent pipe is not rated for more than 100 CFM....a 4 inch vent will move adequate air (even with filtering)....with a couple caveats.

You really only need a piece of the 'normal' blue furnace filter....use a generic 'flapper' type outlet rather than a vaned outlet...keep your vent pipe as short a possible...and start your fan a couple minutes before you begin painting.

The coefficient of friction for moving air is much different between 6" and 4" venting. 4" should move all your air if you jump start it and get things flowing. AND not restricting the outlet.

I am very sorry if I lead anyone astray on this point.

Nam,

It's OK, my friend.  We all make mistakes; and I should know.  I have made some really big ones.  I don't believe there was any intent of deception on your part--just an honest "whoops".

I am curious, though:  What reference material are you citing for the ducting size and airflow handling limitations?  I would like to have a copy of it for my reference files.  I've never heard of a 4- or 6-inch duct being rated as you suggest; but then, there are a lot of things I haven't seen or heard....  Thanks, and

Merry Christmas!

Thanks for the reply Gip!

I was using the standard LIMA Register Co. slide duct calculator and that was my original quote ref.

Not getting into vapor-laden air calculations etc. with the sporadic use of the AB trigger and a constantly moving airflow.....even filtered......a 4" pipe should move it with no trouble.

My new info comes mostly from experienced bath vent/ dryer vent installers who include a few modelers!
