Can only find a big compressor!
Posted by somenewguy on Wednesday, May 27, 2009 11:13 PM

I need a bit of an upgrade from my pissy little Sparmax which 'maxes' out at 10 PSI. So I went off hunting them down in my city and the only decent ones I can come across are these big huge semi-industrial things. Two I came across were under $200AU, had a moisture release valve, regulator, a 24-Litre air tank and go upto about 150 PSI (I only need thirty or so).

My only worry is that they will probably be too loud for the other house members and the neighbours. But because the tanks are so big for an airbrush I thought that after filling them up that the motor might not constantly be turning over and off.

I just need someone to confirm that and advise me if it sounds like a good deal or not. Here is the link to a googled picture of one of them. It might not be the exact same model but it looks identical.

Cheers!

There should be some home handyman type compressors available at home improvement stores. Something suitable for running airtools, nailers and the like. Otherwise you're going to have to shop for a dedicated airbrushing compressor like those made by the airbrush manufacturers. I currently use a Paasche model. See below.

Yes those for utility application tend to be noisy but there are work arounds for that...an insulated sound box or remote placement.

Compressors can get pricey, especially in some regions of the globe. But you have to look at this as a durable tool investment...something that lasts a long time...not something you're going to throw away after a year or two.

You should also consider a CO2 setup....silent and no moisture issues to deal with.

I use a 2 horsepower compressor with a 20 litre tank that I brought from Repco auto parts store for Aust$110.  I have seen the same thing at  Supercheap Auto for about Aust$100 on sale. Bunnings also have them from time to time.   They are noisy but the tank lasts me most painting sessions so I leave it full, so it is ready to go at any time, no air leaks out, and when I have finished I turn it on to refill it.  My work area is out in my shed so I just close the door and window when I turn it on so you can only hear a faint hum.  If you dont have a shed or garage you could always run it in the laundry with the door closed.  Or make a sound proof box as Gerald suggested.    Otherwise the alternative is one of the small airbrush compressors, but these are quite pricey.  I have seen  them over here at the better hobby shops.      Hope this helps.Smile [:)]  Have a good one.

Nice to see another SA lad on the forum, I've also got a 35lit tank compressor i bought at Mitre10. I fill the tank about 1-1.30mins then it turns itself off, and yes its pretty loud, but its not for long. I adjust it to 30psi then off I go. It normally lasts for at least 1 model. I also had a hobby comp and i found it never had enough oomph. don't forget to get yourself a moisture trap because mine did'nt come with one.

Regards

Leo

Sign - Ditto [#ditto] Harbor Freight is where I got mine. the 1/8th HP model. Think it was about 60 dollars and I had it shipped for about 20 to Arizona.
