I suspected it might be something like that.  My concern now is for all the older kits I have in my stash; whether or not they will be buildable and what type of cement I will need to use.

Thanks,

Sounds  like depolymerization. If the kits were very old, and especially if they have been exposed to elevated temperatures or an atmosphere with a high solvent concentration (like a garage), or have been exposed to ultraviolet, this can happen. The solvent cement may have been the trigger, rather than the cause. Solvent cement causes swelling of the plastic, followed by shrinkage. If the plastic was already weakening, something like this could happen. I've seen it mostly in older plastics that have been exposed to UV.

Disintegrating Plastic w/ Testors Liquid Cement

I've been working on a couple of older aircraft  kits, two Airfix and one Monogram, where the the plastic  formed spider cracks, splintered and literally had chunks come out when using Testors liquid cement to join the fuselage halves.  It was an old bottle with very little left in it, which I susequently pitched in the trash.

I've been using this stuff for 30 some years and never had anything like this happen.

 Any thoughts or suggestions?
