Workbenches

Hey all I'm looking for ideas on building a new workbench to go with the new room my Great wife added onto our garage. There used to be some great benches on here but I can't seem to find them.  Can anybody steer me in the right direction or we could start over and post some new pics.

Build your bench to fit your needs, style and size of the projects you intend to build. A tv table isn't conducive with building large scale models such as a 1:72 B-52!

Do you prefer to stand while you build or sit? Build the bench at the proper height for the one you do most. I tend to stand so my bench is tall, I have a draftsman's chair when I want to sit. Make sure you provide ample lighting, you can never have enough.

Make sure if you do stand even only occasionally you pay attention to the floor...a good antifatigue mat is a must. You can get the interlocking squares at most home improvement stores.

Must have TV, Internet, Telephone and Stereo!

Since your workshop is in a garage, make sure you have a place to keep your supplies so they are protected from dust and dirt...as well as creatures who tend to investigate garages for things to chew and nest inside. They love model boxes!

Also if you have children around be sure that you can secure your tools and supplies as well as your projects to prevent mishaps!

Looking back about 14 years ago I had a large workshop in my garage. It took up more than half of a 2 1/2 car garage.

The garage was roomy, but it was also expensive to heat and cool even though it was well insulated...having to dash from the detached garage to the house to potty in inclement weather sucked too.

Garages also see significant temperature and humidity variations...which effect assembly and painting.

At the time I was doing a lot of model building as well as the restoration of large scale floor models...which take up more space than a workbench could handle.

WOW now that is one busy place. Thanks for all the information too. I guess I should have included that the room I have is attached to the garage but it is fully finished out. Its 24'x25' and has heat and AC. Thanks for all the pics too.

I have a dedicated 10'x10' room.  I use a 6' fiberglass folding table that I picked up at Costco for $50 and have added to it, as necessary.

I'm gonna be in the process of building a new bench once I can set up a time with my buddy with a van I'm building on 30" wide by 12' with an 8" shelf running the distance it will also have 3' ells on each end. Imoving my bench to the biggest of the four rooms in my cellar on the high end so I shouldn't have to worry about water as much anymore, its in the low end now. I'm just building it outta 2x4's and plywood top. which I will paint.
