Good Airbrush Kit
Posted by Scott McG on Thursday, December 16, 2010 12:56 PM

Howdy gang!

Well, I have done several searches here, but still did not stumble across what I was looking for.  I am just getting back into scale modelling again (not that I was ever really into it before) and I would love to try airbrushing.  I have quite a bit of experience in painting fantasy miniatures, but never dared to dabble in the mystical arts of the airbrush.

So, I would like to get a good, complete kit to get started.  I am thinking something in the $300-$400 range.  I have seen Testors has a kit, but no idea if that is good or not.  I see Iwata has some nice stuff.

Suggestions?

Well, I have continued hunting around and found the Iwata IW200 kit.  I think this looks like just an excellent setup.

Any thoughts on this?

Wow that is a heck of a budget for a starter kit. Iwata makes good stuff.  With your budget I assume by a kit you mean with a compressor? If not you could just about buy any AB out there.

Yeah it looks like it has pretty much everything I was hoping for.  Two DVDs on what the heck to do with it, some basic paint selection, nice compressor and brush.  If I bought all that separately, it would be a lot more.  I found it online for about $400.00 delivered.  Now just need to scrape up the $400! :)

Wow I was trying for one below 200.00 dollars and thats seeming to be tough. Is a 1/5 hp at 58 psi good or no? Its one from Harbor Freight. Just wondering if it would last or not? I am looking at getting a badger or paasche brush.

Scott, welcome to the forum. You need to go to subforum "Painting and airbrushing" and do a search on "airbrush Canada". You will find tons of information there, and confusion too because of the diverce of opinion.

Unfortunately, airbrush and compressor are more expensive and less easy to find in Canada.

Testors get good compressors, but are extremely overpriced. Their Aztek airbrushes are very different from other brands and most of them in plastic. I have a 470 model for a short while and got rid of it quick.

I believe that Iwata or Harder & Steenbeck may be the best value in airbrush for modeling in North America today. For compressor, Sparmax brand is my pick.
