MODEL TRUCK and CAR WHEELS
Posted by tankerbuilder on Thursday, March 17, 2011 8:28 PM

This hint is for those of you who just HAVE to build them BIG ! There comes a time when you need round rings or partly round gun guards etc. Here,s one that I stumbled on quite by accident . I am making 1/96 scale parts for a client . Now ,some of those parts have handrails that go all the way around them or they are for locating gear at more than one level. A bending jig didn,t prove satisfactory. I happened to be looking at paint bottles (MODELMASTER) and they were to big ! I espied my box of old six by six wheels and assorted civilian truck wheels .  VIOLA ! EUREKA ! I now have six different size ring making tools courtesy of my truck parts box ! You get a good wheel , ( It can,t be assembled) and using half ,the first thing you do is to drill a hole or holes in a row across the wheel with various sized bits that fit the wire you use most . The drill must be used at an angle slightly off center . You put the wire in the hole that fits snugly and roll it in your hand around the wheel as many times as you can . There , now you have a coil of wire that is sized to fit your project . If you want a larger coil then glue two wheels (outers ) together inside face to inside face . Now you have a wire coiler double the width . Believe me ,I like it when the old light bulb comes on especially at my age ,LOL.LOL.LOL.   enjoy    tankerbuilder
