New Metal Curving Tool NOT RECOMMENDED
Posted by TomZ2 on Thursday, July 28, 2011 10:11 PM

This a warning for the community: ModelExpo is advertising item OC19107 (product by OctoCreativo) as:

NEW! METAL CURVING & BENDING TOOL

Sturdy plastic tool guarantees uniform uniform curvature of metal sheets, strips and rods. Bend strips
[sic] rods or metal sheets. Makes working with metal fast and easy, and you'll get the correct shape time after time. (MSRP $19.99)

When it arrived today, despite the advertising, this proved to be black-painted WOOD (I was able to raise the grain with my fingernail), NOT PLASTIC. The tool appears to be nothing but a multiple diameter dowel (gross dimensions: 3.6 in./99 mm long, 1.75 in./44 mm diameter) with a 1/8 in./3.4 mm plywood end-plate.

As ModelExpo is a satisfaction-guaranteed operation, I’m going to return this $20 Spanish dowel for a refund ASAP.

Looks like they made an error in the original description.  The current description reads:

Makes easy work out of bending metal and guarantees the uniform results every time! Pre-carved, stained wooden tool acts as a pattern for bending metal sheets, strips and rods. It will accept metal sheets up to 2-1/4" wide. In addition, it lets you create three different curvatures in metal strips and rods. 3-3/4" long, 2-2/4" diameter.

Personally, I've never liked any of the tools I've received from ModelExpo.  I love their wood ship models but I'll stick with MicroMark for my tools.

The tool was radically poorer in quality than the “beauty” item used in their ads. The grain was so rough and deep that I was concerned it would emboss its pattern into soft material. And thanks to the uneven drying of the wood, the tool is noticeably out-of-true.

This looks like plastic or some machined material.

Yeah, I agree.  The one in the ad does look a whole bunch better.

I never buy tools from them unless I know the tool they're selling.

Back in the day sewing thread was wrapped around a wooden spool that looks like that tool.

You know,  you can use a set of drill bits (hardware store sizes as opposed to hobby shop item) to acheive curved bends in photoetched or sheet metal parts.    For diameters above a half inch, look at the plumbing department for copper or PVC pipe.
