Looking for a good pin vise.
Posted by In The Woods on Sunday, October 30, 2011 7:52 PM

I am looking for recommendations for a good pin vise.  By a good  pin vise, I mean one that will accurately grip the smallest drill bits, the ones that look like a teeny piece of wire.  The vise I have now won't hold the tiniest bits at all:  they fall out even if I tighten the thing with a pair of pliers!  so, what brand of vise or, maybe, technique do you use to work those tiny drills?  Besides rotating them between finger and thumb, as I have done on occasion.

A big thank you to all who reply.

With best regards.

I'm still looking- my latest which work reasonably well is that set of four found in many catalogs.  Be sure and get a STEEL one.  Aluminum ones do not last- the threads gall.  Having a knob on top is nice.

You might want to take a look at MicroMark.  They have a nice selection of pin vices as well as a lot of other tools and gadgets useful to modelers.

you can get a quality pin vise from a Welding Supply store.

They are used to clean the tips on acetylene torches.

I will second on the Starret pin vices there Bill.  I am a watchmaker by profession and my pin vices HAVE to be good.  They can be ordered from Wholesale Tool   That is wttool.com.  They have a ton of other stuff there too.  I tend to avoid the cheaper tools there just to let you know.
