Another Tip (locking hemostats)
Posted by maddafinga on Saturday, January 31, 2004 1:50 PM
It had never occured to me to post this as a modeling tip, but I make use of it all the time and it just might be pretty handy.

I use a couple of pairs of locking hemostats that I took home from work. They are great at holding and keeping secure parts, and since they have teeth, the parts don't get tweezerpulted as badly. I took a rubber band and wrapped it around the handle of the hemos, below the teeth and above the finger loops. With this, you can hold a piece securely without having to squeeze the hemos until they lock. Since they do have teeth, locking down on a piece of plastic can leave marks. Now you can hold stuff without those teeth screwing it up. If you want the grip tighter or looser, move the rubber band forward or backward depending on what you need.

You stole tools from work? What a great idea! Nice tip! I'll try it! :)

Ok, serious now. My tip would be to wrap that air brush hose around your arm before you spray. It is not funny to have the hose catch on something and have the airbrush yanked from your arm flinging paint all over your project then having the airbrush hit hard on anything nearby to eventually crash hard on the floor. Just not good. A hose wrapped around your arm secures the airbrush in your hand...so your whole arm gets ripped off instead! Ok, I'm really serious now.....

Great tip Madda.

Roosterfish- that object yanking it out a hand would'nt be something like a 2 year old running by? Have a couple of close calls with him sneaking up before.

Ok, I'll add another tip here if you don't mind.

While painting my A/C I needed a way to protect the finish on both the underside and the topside while each coat was drying and also to apply decals, weathering, etc, before the final clear coat goes on.

I took a piece of styrofoam sheet (actually a piece of styrofoam from a packaged eBay win) and stuck three toothpicks in it so that they would hold the model in the air with minimal contact. I placed two so that they would fit into the gear wells, and one under the horizontal stab next to the fuselage.
The toothpicks have since been replaced with Q-tips with one tip cut off at an angle to stick into the foam.
Also, if you dampen the tips and then let them dry, you won't leave any fuzzies behind.

later,

stinger

That's good too Stinger. I've also lately taken to putting down a 3 or 4 inch long strip of the 3m blue masking tape on the drawing pad that I use as a work pad. I put all my glue on it, it doesn't seep through, and when I'm done with it, I pull the tape up and throw it away. Then I put down a new one, it's been working nicely for me.
