I used to have the TV on, but would watch more then build. I would waste so much time watching stupid reality shows,  ie swamp people, pawn stars, etc. We decided to cancel Dish and just watch stuff online. I build so much quicker now.

No TV in my hobby room, but I will gang load my PC with a bunch of you tube videos, dogfights episodes, etc. while I build.

Ditto YouTube videos.. I have a buncha WW2 Training films bookmarked, as well as some full-length movies, rock concerts, etc..

They training films double as references, and when I hear something that might interest me, I stop what I'm doing and go back and see what they're talking about... That's when I can pause, then snap a screen-shot, paste in MS Paint,  and save a reference photo that probably doesn't exist anywhere else..

I also stream some radio stations as well..

I have to be careful while having the TV/DVD on as I sometimes find myself watching and not modeling.

I've been watching old episodes of Whats My Line, I've Got a Secret, and To Tell the Truth. I find these are less visually distracting and you can play along just by listening.

One interesting thing I've noticed is military related guests are all over these shows and are dealt a great deal of respect. I'm bettin you would not find that on todays game shows.

I very seldom have the TV on when modeling, and never the radio. When I was building my model tornado chase vehicle, I might put the TV on the Weather Channel if there's a tornado outbreak or a landfalling hurricane and model while the action was going on. I even have a videotape of Hurricane Katrina making landfall, plus a couple of others, but I always forget to put them in the player (I was never a big TV watcher). Part of it is I can't stand the commercials and would constantly have to stop modeling to fast-forward the VCR.

When I had a TV that worked, on weekends I'd catch up on modeling while watching long auto races, especially if there was a red flag or long yellow with lots of cleanup.  Not much going on except commentary, so I could get in a little modeling.  I could tell when race was being restarted- time to go upstairs to big TV.

Ahhh. Dr Strangelove. An absolute classic! "Hi there" and "Dear John" written on nukes! Hilarious. No TV in my hobby room, but I will gang load my PC with a bunch of you tube videos, dogfights episodes, etc. while I build.

Well;
I was working on them, unfortunately only put 6 of those radial reinforcements in.

Mind you, it shouldn't take much to get them back up to John Von Neumann's standards....lol...:

I'll never forget the big blast scene from Gilligan's Island....lol....

I don't have the pause and rewind option with free view. If theres anything i am interested in, i make sure i set the reminder. If i miss anything, no bigger. It will be repeated at some point.

Speaking of TV, i have been away from home and camp the last two weeks, and haven't watched any. Its been rather nice.

My current model room serves a number of roles. Its also my bedroom, sitting room, kitchen and wash room. So the TV and Blue ray are right next to the desk. I just have the normal free view, this suits me as i am not much for watching TV. But i will normally have the BBC news channel on while modelling, that or a movie. Once i have watched a movie once, i am quite happy to just have it on looking up once in a while.

When i get the models relocated home and finally get a model room set up there, i will probably have that wired into the Sky. I can watch the History channel to my hearts content then.

Roger that-  I would find a TV too distracting while concentrating on a modeling project.  I do listen to music from the great FM Jazz radio station we have here in Denver, or sometimes Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity on the AM band, for as long as I can stand it......

Gimme a pigfoot, and a bottle of beer...

My I have my computer monitor on a vesa mount which hangs above my modeling desk.  I download and watch tv on my computer while modeling.  I can even use my iPad as a second monitor using an air display application so if I have to look something on the web I can drag over the show I'm watching to the 2nd monitor and continue to watch, use the computer and model at the same time.

I used to, before over-the-air went digital.  Used to pick up even new TVs for around 20 bucks, used ones for five or so at garage sales.

Now, garage sale TVs are all analog- won't work without a converter or something similar, which is just too expensive for basement workshop :-(  I see portable TVs coming down slightly, cheapest I have seen is still over $70 though, converters at least $45.  Still looking for a 10-20 buck solution.

NAT Geo channel runs a 2 am special on Manny's speeches..Whistling

I want to add,, most of my TV "watching" ,, is more listening while gluing.. snipping.. sanding etc.. I don't usually watch first run shows while building.. but I still find the pause feature good for those shows I am watching/listening to.. I still feel the 48$ was well worth it.. Smile

Used to watch TV while soldering and model building but never paid enough attention to warrant continuing the practice.

I do occasionally listen to Chicago WLS radio but usually listen to music.

Would be nice if I had some of Manny's recent inspirational speeches compiled onto CDs ........Big Smile

Dre

As a single man, my house is my mancave so I have moved my work table into the living room so I watch TV and work on kits at the same time- it was easier than moving the TV and running cables to the stash room.

Now that football season is over, I might actually get some models finished!

I have a Direct TV whole house system with HD DVR's on all three of our HDTV's, including the 20" on the wall in front of my workbench. So pause and play is not an issue. With the whole house system, I can start watching a recorded show in one room, and finish watching it in another.

That's a great tip actually! Yes

I set up in the living room on Sunday afternoons and put on a DVD or Netflix. We have a DVR as well so that does come in handy for the aforementioned reasons.

Tool Idea... do you watch TV while Modeling ??

If you don't have a TV in your modeling area.. no need to read further...

If some of you are like me... I have a TV in my modeling area.. ( on my desk.. 17" flat screen ) .. Mine is hooked to Cable tv and also a DVD player.. I like to watch TV,, DVD's etc while modeling..

I also have a TIVO.. ( DVR ) hooked to my downstairs , main room Tv.. I thought it would be cool to be able to pause TV or record shows in my Mancave..

While lurking EBay one day.. I bid and won a used TIVO for 48$ including shipping..

I hooked it up to my mancave tv and.. presto !! if the dog wants out.. or I need a potty break... etc.. I can pause the show., or record it for later..

Drawbacks.. I did not purchase the service( also cost $$ to add it to my current service)  so the channel line up is off, as is the time.. so programming a specific show is hard,, but not impossible..

you will need to clear out any of the previous owners pre recorded shows and his " to record" shows..

PLUS'  pausing shows while your watching for potty breaks.. doggy breaks.. or looking thru the stash or referances for stuff..

instant replays if you missed something while battleing the carpent monster.. or removing the furry agents from behind the modeling desk.. or from the tallest part of your stash.. !

Recording shows or later viewing.. or saving for referances later on...

they are fairly cheap... on Ebay.. I'm glad I got mine..
