Tools for grabbing missles, bombs and shells when painting?
Posted by Chrisk-k on Friday, June 8, 2012 8:53 PM

Since they need to be painted separately, I need to grab them and AB them. I used my finger tips. It was a tedious process because I had to AB one by one. Any better ideas?

Hi Crisk-k,

I used ouble sided tape and put it onto the lid of a used jar. I then place the bomb/missile's flat side/ end on the tape, and then spray it. Once dry I repeat the same on the flat side. Hope this helps

Cheers Leo

Hello!

In such a situation I'd use a piece of wire and insert it into the mounting hole (make a U-shaped holder, if there are two of them), the plus side is you can later use the same wire as hanger for drying. If there are no holes and I don't want to make any, I'd take a piece of stretched sprue and glue it to the painted object with CA, so that after painting I can snap the holder off. The attachment point has to be chosen so that it will be masked by a pylon or something, so that I don't have to touch it up. You can use the regular sized side of the sprue as a handle and the small diameter, stretched end as the attachment point. Hope it helps, have a nice day

This is the type of question where you will different solutions and you can pick your favorite.  I drill a hole in a spot that is not obvious when glued in place.  jab a toothpick in there and off tot he paint booth.  Keep a small block of styrofoam for the other end to hole 'em while they dry.  For flat things like landing gear doors etc double stick tape, as mentioned above, on a "' wide piece of 1/4" about a foot long.  One handle... multiple pieces.

Sometimes I paint them before removing them from the sprue, then later touch up the nip-off point, if necessary.

Gimme a pigfoot, and a bottle of beer...

I have several of those alligator clips that I use to hold them.  That way I can paint a bunch all at once.  I'm able to pick them up, rotate them as I paint them, and then move on to the next missle or bomb.
