pin vises...
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, February 15, 2004 5:11 PM
I need a pin vise, so I looked on Great Models Webstore for them. However, they give no description as to what each set contains. All it says is something like "pin vise and 12 drill bits". However, I need to know the sizes. What I'm looking for is very small bits; I already have a dremel bit set that goes down to 1/32" in diameter. I'm not looking for really good quality; just something cheap, but not junky. Also, I want to order one from Great Models Webstore because I am already ordering something else that's only 3 dollars, and I don't wanna spend 5 bucks for shipping on just one item.

Most of the Pinvises I have seen can take bits from 0.1~ 3.2/3.5mm.

Most of the sets that come packaged with the pinvise don't normally have very small bits in them, rather buy your own set or the drillbits individually.

Also check the material for the drill-bits careful, some materials are brittle and will snap easily.

One bit of advise for the Pin-vise, make sure that is has a swivel head at the end , some don't have(open ended) and it ends up as blister city for your hands.

If it a double ended pin vise, it will probably work just fine for what you want. As far as the drill bits go, you will probably get 12 bits rangeing from 55 to 80 with no guarantees or choice as to what you get.

I bought mine from a supply store that dealt with welding. The fellow in the store called it a tip drill and it cost me around $7. It has sizes that are very small (most I have never used).

Welcome sparticus
I've had a cheap pin vise for a long time and use it frequently as a handle for figs. I've rarely made holes with it. I think it was an xacto one and it had a few small bits.

This is where a LHS comes in so handy. I need to drill a hole and bring a sample to the store and the guys behind the counter and I figure out which bits I need and I'm home in a flash. If I can keep out of the piant racks, magazine racks, model stacks and no one's there I know. Smile [:)]

Remember, if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.
