I use old coffee mugs,that have been chipped or de-handled, 
for pens, pencils etc,
also for those large bottles of solvents/adhesives, along with the nearly knackered brushes, to stop me knocking them over...
I also use those cutlery divider trays for tools, files, etc.
And those long boxes that pc keyboards come in, with a piece of corrugated cardboard for long bits of sprue, rod, bar, U/H/& I sections,
My paint brushes live in several of those paintbrush rolls, kept flat, dry & dark, with nothing left on them to squish'em.
I also have several lockable under-desk drawer pedestals, to keep said blades, solvents, glues & paints away from the kids & quadrupeds...
