Heating PE pieces
Posted by Chili on Thursday, February 20, 2014 2:33 PM

In a FSM "How To video", Aaron Skinner use a mini torch to heat PhotoEtch pieces, to facilitate bending them into cylinders. Is a mini-torch needed, or will a candle serve the same purpose as a heat source?  What are your experiences? If it is a torch, any advice on which torch to buy?

I have used a candle and a lighter. In both cases they were enough to do the job.

A small butane torch works real well, and very fast. I've found a lighter takes forever. Just search ebay for a torch, or any large hardware store. Keep in mind, any peices you don't want to bend, such as landing gear covers or any pe part that requires no bending, will be warped by the heat, so point away from these parts as you heat the fret.

I use the candle flame- works well.  Heating is only needed to bend gradual curve or bend.  Sharp bends can usually be made without annealing.  Cylinders like aircooled gun barrels must be annealed.
