New tool on the workbench
Posted by Bick on Sunday, July 20, 2014 11:47 AM

Stopped in Harbor Freight today and saw this - thought it might be handy on the workbench. Magnifier is 2X with a 6X "zoom" lens with 2 super bright LED lights, and with a soldering iron stand. For anyone interested it's item #65779 and $7.99.

How heavy is the base, is it fairly stable?

LOL, me too. Didn't intend to buy anything - just stopped in but - oh well. And, the base is cast iron and fairly hefty so the gadget is quite stable even with the large magnifier. Too, the magnifier can be removed by loosening a single screw if one wants to use it as the more usual 'third hand, 'helping hand' or whatever it's called.

Are the lights bright enough.  My old eyes need lots of light :)

Thanks for posting this.

There are two super bright white LEDs powered by 3 AAA cells directing light down at an angle from the back bottom of the magnifier. They do add additional light to something held in the clips over what is provided by ambient light. It's more than a gimmick I think - they are useful.

Ooooo... a new toy! Gotta stop by one day and pick one up. Harbor Freight does get some cool tools perfect for this hobby.
