Substitute for Humbrol Matt Cote
Posted by aWintersTale on Thursday, November 6, 2014 5:56 PM
Did anyone see on the Humbrol YouTube channel, the weathering of rolling stock by pigments, where rust pigments were fixed by Humbrol Matt Cote thinned with Humbrol thinner, then later reactivated through chipping of the topcoat, to appear as rust chips with rust streaks? This technique seems to be unique to Humbrol, and shows much promise. But a 28ml of Humbrol Matt Cote is $34!! I'm checking if someone knows the chemical equivalence to the product here in the states, that hopefully would be less expensive. Thanks.

I use Testors Dullcoat to dull down finishes and apply rust streaks with washes.  Several model paint companies make really good rust colors.  Washes with two company's paints give a little variation in color.

There are many ways to replicate rust. You can use the hair spray method to get very realistic weathered finishes ranging from specs to large rusty streaky areas . You can use rust colored paint and while wet, sprinkle rust colored pigment for a rusty textured look. Rust can also be produced by using artist's oils as washes or simply applied thick from the tube and streaked.

You can get the same effect of the fancy named products from well known companies by simply using Home Improvement store regular thinner.
