Window upgrade for 1/72 Flying Fortress?
Posted by minimagneto on Tuesday, November 11, 2014 10:42 AM

Hi folks,

I've been planning a B-17 build for a while.  I have the 1/72 scale Academy kit.  Wanting to go the extra mile I also have collected an aftermarket photo etched interior detail set as well as crew figures.

My concern is with the clear plastic window parts (canopy, nose, etc).  They are always way too thick for scale (or did B-17's have 3 foot thick windows?)  and will surely obscure the view of any amount of interior detail I could add.

My question: does anyone know of any aftermarket upgrades I could acquire? Or maybe even just techniques to improve the clarity of clear plastic?

Any input greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Blake

Squadron Products makes a aftermarket product for the B17 at 1/72 scale.

At least some of the aftermarket windows from Squadron are kit-specific, designed to fit Hasegawa's offerings and another for Academy's.

If you're doing the B-17G, this link is for the Academy kit.

This link is for B-17E/F, which is also probably for the Academy kit, although it doesn't say so; but Hasegawa doesn't make an "E" so it's likely for Academy.  It doesn't appear that this is actually the framed "E" nose piece, though.

They do work well.  I replace the kit nose piece at least on any Fortress I do.  I'm not sure which set contains them, but Squadron also provides the early three-piece canted waist windows to replace the B-17G's single piece window.

You can see inside pretty well.

Thanks for the great info guys.  Checkmateking, great photo and yes, the aftermarket glass is a big improvement, looks worth it to me.  Might actually be a while before I tackle the B-17, but I've been planning and researching for a while now!

Thanks, Blake.  I do love the B-17.
