Looking for task light advice
Posted by scaled2perfection on Sunday, September 20, 2015 9:24 PM

Looking for some advice about the task lights. Any advice you could give me as to if you find this light useful or where you would put it would be very helpful. I think they could be helpful I'm just not sure about placement of the lights or how many I would need. I would appreciate any advice.

Light Specs

  • High powered LED

  • 24in gooseneck

  • 12-28 volt operation

  • Color Temperature: 3,100k ( Very natural looking light)

  • CRI: 90+ Ra (This makes for very realistic light color. which is great for detailed projects)

  • Average Life: 60,000.

  • Also can be mounted with a variety of different bases.

  • Limited Lifetime warranty

  • Durable

  • Extremely high quality

In my opinion worrying about color temperature isn't of big consequence for non-flying models.  I used to participate in RC scale.  There, the planes are displayed and judged in sunlight, so maybe building (or at least painting) under sun colored lights are important.  But I have never participated in a shelf-scale/non-flying scale model show that was outdoors- all the shows are lit with incandescent, fluorescent, or a mix of the two, lights.

Personally I work under fluorescent light- one of those ring lights that have a big magnifier in the middle. It is positionable. I think easy positioning is essential. I airbrush right at my workbench and want to see a reflection of my task light in the surface I am painting while I paint.

Thanks Don. If the task light can come in a 24in gooseneck do you think that is long enough if it's mounted to a work station? I have limited knowledge of optimal model making workstations. Also how much do you think a task light set up should cost for a quality one?

I would think 24 inches would be long enough for most workbenches.  It is hard to judge a price.  I notice tools for modelers are quite expensive- I guess priced by what the traffic will bear.  Modelers seem to be willing to pay a lot for their tools Smile

I use this "Tensor LED Double Reach Premium Desk Lamp"

http://www.staples.ca/en/Tensor-LED-Double-Reach-Premium-Desk-Lamp/product_1574838_2-CA_1_20001

Has great reach and the light can be adjusted to a yellow light to a bright white light.

I got a small desk lamp very similar to this one, except the one I got was $15, not $80:

The one I got has 1 super-bright LED in it, and casts about an 18" circle of light. I really like it. My bench has 4ft shop lights hanging above it, but I can take this little lamp into the living room and work on a TV tray while the family watches a movie.

I also really like these:

I bought two a couple of LED bulbs to stick in 'em. Key word--cheap. The portability of these is nice as well. I use them to do home repairs or to work on my Jeep as much as I use them for modeling.
