Model drying rack
Posted by Comanche pilot on Thursday, November 12, 2015 10:43 AM

After reading about Don's drying box it occurred to me that a food dryer like the ones used to make beef jerky might do the trick. I am experimenting. So far, a few lessons on what to avoid and the best method, so far.

I have a DAK food dryer that's been in storage for decades. I decided to use a 1/48 Grumman Bearcat to experiment.

First off the lid is too shallow to cover AND seal any model. It's made for jerky, after all. I found a round cake bin lid fit perfectly.

Second, I put a smoker thermometer inside and it got a bit too hot at 140F which did not distort the plastic but got the paint to stick just a bit and caused a little blemish. Moving the lid to the side to vent the heat got the temps down a bit but still more than I liked. So I removed the lid completely for satisfactory temps of 110F, good airflow and quick drying.

Third, I found that putting the model on wine corks was better than directly on the plastic food drying trays.

Let's see if I can do pics.
