I bought a pack or various widths and prints meant for scrapbooking to try out and have mixed results. I found that that the adhesive was not consistant from one roll to another. Some stuck down too much and pulled paint, others started to peel away within a few hours.
Depending on the print on each roll, I found some conformed better then others to curves etc. When cut into thin strips, each roll also had unpredicable results. I stopped using them as my primary tape and went back to Tamiya. I now am using the rolls that do work as filler masking tape once I have the area outlined by tamiya tape.
I have been using tamiya tape for years. Its predicable, has good flex, can be kept on for months with no ill effects, cuts clean, the dispensing case keeps the tape edge dust free.
I do not feel the washi tape is a replacement but may have its uses.
What's this tape's brand and name at Michael's?
Tried some of this last week and I like it!
Michaels sells a six pack of this tape that comes with a dispenser. The Tamiya tape will actually fit on this dispenser! Much better dispenser than the one Tamiya sells. You can fit 4-5 rolls on one of these.
I had bought a roll of the blue 1/16" and 1/8". That was the 1/8 straight off the roll. Curves were big enough radius to get away with it. The rear scallops were pattern cut off the kit decals in Tamiya tape. I also used the 1/8" doing the blue, but should have gone with the 1/16" there as the wing curves were tighter radius and I had some cleanup to do on "blowouts" and creep under the edge.
Should have fixed the white peelup prior to doing the blue, and now have a big mess to fix as it pulled more and got into all 3 colors. Bad prep on my part, and not due to the tape- it only happened in the one spot.
Plane is 1/48th Mustang with wing clip.
Here are a couple of pics of the above tape and the results.
Just un-masked the red on Miss America. Came off nice and only pulled one small spot of white by a gear door (probably my fault not scuffing the primer in that spot. Pulled the white but not the primer.) Nice clean line, easy to remove. Recommend the blue Headline Sign Art Tape. Will have some pics of the red in the Mustang GB by tomorrow.
The well known 3M brand also produces washi tape. Seems here in the west it's known more as decorative tape than as an actual brand?
regards,
Jack
When I was in HL last week, one of the ladies pointed me to the line of "Art Tape". Blue crepe tape in 1/16, 1/8 and 1/4 widths, at around 2.49 a roll. The 1/16th is 603" on the roll. Got a roll of 1/8 and 1/16th to try.
Am using it on the mustang (Miss America) right now to lay out the red over the white, so we will see how it goes. Laid out nice and is easy to form curves with and you can re-lay it if you need to to adjust your lines, at least a couple of times. Will see how acrylics affect the edges and how it peels up. More later.
modelmaker66 with all the tapes out there is there really a need for another tape on out bench? Is it that much better or that much cheaper?

No one is saying you have to own every brand of tape and have it on your bench. But, having multple brands gives the modeler a choice to which one best suits their needs. I see no down side to having more types of tape available.

On the bench: 1/48 Eduard MiG-21MF
1/35 Takom Merkava Mk.I
I actually watched that video just this afternoon and I think its definitely got some merit. It seems a bit "tackier" than Tamiya tape, but he says (Not putting a ton of confidence in that) that it doesnt lift NMF. I think some testing is in order.
On the Bench: Lots of unfinished projects!
I agree, it looks to be worth a try. Even if you still use Tamiya tape for the paint line, and use the Washi tape to fill in.
Watched the review by Flory Models and it does looks promising.
hogfanfs BlackSheepTwoOneFour Nathan T I haven't tried it but there's a good video tutorial on Flory Models YouTube channel. What does Flory models YouTube video have to do with Washi tape? LOL! Haven't tried it but may check it out next time I'm at Hobby Lobby. This is what it has to do with it:

Well, if he had posted the link...
Hobby Lobby had it on sale last week.
I bought several rolls but havent tried it yet.
Come in really "pretty" colors!!!
I had a friend tell me that modelers are using Washi tape, which is found in papercrafting departments, instead of Tamiya tape. The vibe is that it works great and is cheaper. Anyone here have any experience with it?
