It works fine, until the added resistance causes the dimmer and cord to overheat and start a fire, and also destroys the motor on the tool by lowering the amperage available.

 

Don't ever do this! that is why ceiling fans are not attatched to a dimmer! Very bad advice! Fire hazard for sure.

Here is something I have done many times which comes in handy. Simply wire a light dimmer switch into a extension cord and you can control the speed of any power tool ypou plug into the cord.
