Best 'putty' for intake seams?
Posted by cbaltrin on Monday, March 16, 2020 9:33 AM

Hi, I am looking for ideas for a compound for filling intake seems (Monogram F-14 comes o mind as an example). Compound would not have to be particularly strong/durable as it is to be applied to an area that would not be touched/handled, BUT, the main characteristic would be that it is very easy to sand when dry.

Thanks

I've recently tried Tamiya gray putty mixed with Tamiya green cement. It paints on nicely and sands ok.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Perfect Plastic Putty,no sanding needed, can be leveled out with water.

I also use Mr Surfacer 500,can be brushed on and leveled out with a swab and lacquer thinner

I use Perfect Plastic Putty and Tamyia Liquid Surface Primer. TLSP is thin and fills thin seams better. I apply it with a toothpick. It sands easy. However. it does shrink and the odor is really strong.

Your comments and questions are always welcome.

Here's another vote for PPP. And for the reasons stated above.

I often use flat (fast drying) paint, not stirring the bottom but taking it from bottom.  Brushes into the crack easily.  You still need to smooth it after it dries a bit- I sometimes use a very small screwdriver.  I have a set that was made from soft steel- useless with a screw but a good chisel or smoothing tool.
