Testors, Anyone?
Posted by Tanker-Builder on Saturday, June 11, 2022 12:08 PM

Hi Ya'll;

       Just got back from our local Hobby Lobby. Got some Testors liquid Glue. Hey! Guess what? It still smells horrible! But still works well. How do I know about the smell? Well, even with the lid tight,, one of the bottles had a mini leak. No Damage to anything but what an odor! Oh, On the Back is the name and full address for Rustoleum corp. Down to their Zip Code!

       Ya know it's funny. I could've sworn the bottle was taller, probably wishful thinking. Also, when you go to your local H.L. you may find all the Glues(liquid) and Thinners as well as Airbrush cleaner, and Mr Model glue, are locked up, so you have to ask one of the nice ladies to help you!

Testors liquid (the one with black bottle with metal wand) is still my main tougher glue. It holds stronger than Testors orange tube and has slower set up time than Tamiya so I can move something around a bit before it grabs. The liquid is good for more stressed items like door hinges and such. If there is any thought of getting something back apart later for a rebuild or repaint I use the orange tube.

I haven't been to Hobby Lobby in a while now, maybe 2-3 months ago. I did notice then a few more things under lock but not the paints as of that time at least. I tend to go on Fridays, thats their running sale day 40% off plastic kits. Good time to grab a 1/16 scale car.

Rustoleum was the actual producer of Testors brands for some time now (decades?). Once Testors went under, they just continued to produce the stuff under license.

Oldermodelguy?

       Who's older, You or Me? Anyway, I still use tha black bottle stuff in paticular situations, but technically it is really NOT in the Clear liquid in the glass bottle category. It is more like Testors tried to emulate Revell type"S' tube glue. Thin and useable in tight spots.

Not under license per se.  RPM Industries is a global industrial, commercial, and residential paint and coatings conglomerate https://www.rpminc.com/  which owns, in addition to Rustoleum and Testors, other brands you may know:  DayGlo, DAP, Gator adhesives, ALEX caulk, Kwik Seal, Plastic Wood, RotoRooter, Zinsser lacquers, Varthane, Watco stains, plus many more.    Walk down the paint aisle in your local big box hardware store.

It is obvious that Testors Model Master was not a profit center in the corporation (small potatoes) and did not have an advocate in the corporate structure.   The demise is likely not noted in the corporation profit & loss statement

Notice!

        Here's a company(RPM) that has swallowed up a great many not just local but international brands. I would be willing to bet many on their Board have never even heard of the Testors division!

 Plain and simple it's a a conglomerate Monopoly of various coating and adhesive products. Many are (or Were) the most reputable in the world. They have marine coatings that were sworn by years ago by Proffessionals in the Yachting and Boat restoration businesses. Then there were none! All, Gone because they were and even as large as the industry is, Coatings for Wood Boats! this is a niche market too!

Funny how so many people love the idea of unfettered lese faire capitalism, then hate the companies for raising prices to increase their profits Confused

What bites is that Testors gobbled up all of their previous US based competitors:Floquil/Polly S, Pactra, etc. then discontinued those lines. If a paint company or line prices itself out of existence is another matter.
