Rotary Tools

Hi!

Many questions have been asked, A few far out answers have been posted.Far out as to time not solutions. I have found through careful examination and usage that Neither dremel, Proxxon or the other well known Rotaries aren;t technically suitable for plastic! The reaason.Final lower speed! The lowest speed rotary I could find was still rated to high at 3,000 r.p.m.

This is still too high for plastic! I finally went to the lightest Dremel single Speed I could find and went to my sewing machine Store and bought a foot control. This reduced the speed without damaging the unit and allowed control to very slow speeds. The other method is to find a Small Pistol sized Rechargeable Drill and Fit the Dremel chuck in it's chuck. They are small enough to be light and workable.

Black and Decker was my go to, But, lately it's been Ryobi or others. The lack of small light units being the problem. You don't want the weight of a battery pack hindering flexibility!  Proxxon does still make a cable drive, I haven't seen one lately though.(That doesn't mean they are unavailable)

Proxxon Micromot 60/E.

Best rotary tool I've used. Quite impressive low speed.  They say 5000 rpm in lowest speed, but I suspect it is much lower than that if you reduce the output from the power supply--which is what I regularly do for drilling and painting tires...

Yeah, I remember reading a post somewhere in the 'Net that someone ran his Dremel through an old model railroad transformer as an additional control.

I still wouldn't use it myself for drilling plastic.  I do use mine for grinding the inside of a fuselage or hull, as the first step in reproducing shell damage, as Shep Paine demonstrated in his "Tips" back in the day.

When I have to drill holes, I use my pin vise and do it by hand.
