Two rotary tool questions
Posted by cdclukey on Wednesday, March 30, 2005 7:51 PM
Hey, I bought a rotary tool today. It was inexpensive ($15 on clearance) but it has variable speed and quite an assortment of bits and sanding disks and drums.

Here are my questions:

1. The lowest speed I can set this on is 8,000 rpm. The nice Dremels on the same shelf go down to 5,000. Is 8,000 going to give me melting problems with styrene? If not, what's the top of the range?

2. Any tips, accessories, etc. that might help me get the mos out of this thing? Right before I bought it I ran into a guy from the local model RR club and he was ecstatic about his, even said he had "used up" one of the big 185 piece Dremel accessory kits.

There are several schools of thought as to the useful speed of a Dremel tool. You should check this thread out. http://www.finescale.com/fsm/community/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=27278
I'm mostly a scratchbuilder so I have a wide range of bits for my machines but your use will dictate what bits you need.

My dremel has a 5k and 10k setting I seem to use the 5k setting more often then the 10k. I use it mainly on resin pour stubs not so much for styrene. The main tip i use is a sanding barrel. Im not a scratch builder or kit basher so I dont have many attachments or tips. Good luck Im sure you will get plenty of use out of yours.

I have a 10k to 33k dremel, used with caution 10k is fine.
I have used a 5k dremel of a friend and found it a very good speed. No problems with melting what so ever.

There are loads of tools for the dremel, I like the cutting discs and the sanding tools.
