Magnifier and Light
Posted by kielers on Thursday, April 7, 2005 3:19 AM
For those looking for a good magnifier and light setup, I found one. I looked for a long time for one of these and first bought a cheap one from the same place. The place is Dick Blick Art Materials web site.

The first set I bought was a clamp-on, extendable swing arm lamp with a 4" dia. #3 diopter magnifying lens in the head and a single light bulb on the side of the lens. The cost was about $25 and though it was cheap it was better than nothing.

Then Dick Blick began to offer this new lamp and magnifier set. It's the same extendable, swing arm style but a lot longer and sturdier so it doesn't wobble and shake excessively when I bump it. But the best features are the light and magnifying options. It comes with a 7" dia. #3 diopter lens already in the head and a 28 w 'true daylight" tube light bulb that circles the lens. Optional lens are #5 and #8 diopter lens to replace the #3 lens and a #12 diopter smal swing arm lens that mounts on the head and uses the larger lens for added magnification. The lamp and #3 lens is about $100 and the extra lens are $16 each, but they are all well worth the money. I really like the whole set-up so much I had to pass on this info.

The Dick Blick web site is a great resource for art supplies. I bought a lot of my paint brushes, oil paint, powdered graphite, and even graphite transfer paper for them. The customer servvice is very good and shipping was fast. Just do a search for Dick Blick Art Materials and you'll find it.

Hope this helps someone

This is not an advertisement, I'm just passing on some good info.

I have an Ott light with attached magnifier and am very happy with it. http://www.ottlite.com/productdetail.asp?product_id=31 Not cheap, but runs cool and has a full-spectrum bulb so you know what you're getting when doing any kind of paint work. Has both a weighted stand for use on a table top and a clamp that I have mounted on a workbench, so it's pretty flexible. I do most of my modeling at night, so having a good quality light was worth it to me.
