gr8 looking antennae wire
Posted by jinithith2 on Tuesday, May 10, 2005 9:36 PM
today, I skipped ahead in my swift patrol boat to put the antennae on, and I used a segmant of a used cello D string, and it looked grrrreat!
to obtain the cello string, i just asked my orchestra teacher if I could take the set of strings in the trashcan. he said yes, so I have antennae!

I can't use one of mine because I play the violin and I think it's too thin, and the cello string was free!

so like that guy said in the FSM magazine a couple of months ago, when you go to a music store, look for something useful. in this case, a cheap cello D string.
I think any D string would work, except the cello's is longer. bass's is too thick.
I looked around in my LMS and they were selling beginner D's for around 4 bucks.

D Strings work OK, but watch out for G Strings Smile [:)].

Try it with a violin E string. It just might might make your model squeak.

well, they sag a little bit. the longer you have it, the more it will sag.

To respond to their flexibility - I used some guitar string for long whip antennae on a M113 APC. I'm not sure what chord they were but came from one of the thinner wires in a pack of six strings that I purchased. The cost was less the 5 euros. They work great. I drilled holes in the bases and superglued them in. They stand straight up and act just like the real whip antennae on an APC or even HMMWV.

My questions are - is a cello D string thinner than the thinnest guitar string? And how do violin strings compare in thickness to guitar strings? I'm looking for the thinnest wire I can find for 1/48 aircraft antennae.

try a violin E string. I think that might be the thinnist.
