Variation of Swanny's fume can
Posted by wing_nut on Sunday, October 23, 2005 11:36 AM
First let me say that swanny's fume can is an essetial tool and I use mine all the time... I never clean my AB without it. I only use enamels and there is ZERO smell coming out of this. Great idea swanny!

I made a slight mod in the use of a coffee "can" since it has a built in hanlde ana lid that a bit more secure than the whipped crean tub.

Pretty nice. How did you attached the organic vapor cartridge to the top of the lid?

Cut a hole just big enough for the openeing on the back of the cartridge to fit in, run a nice bead of silicone caulk around the hole and set the cartridge in place. It is the procedure described on Swanny's web site linked below. I just used a different can and added a couple of tiny screws from the underside of the lid into the bottom of the cartridge housing to make it a liilte more secure. The screw heads are dabbed with caulk to seal.

Wing_nut - I built Swanny's fume can some years back (well 2 years ago). It works pretty well. From the photo, it looks like your filter is on top of the outside. Can give clearer instructions/photos for the filter part and also, what kind of filter are you using. For Swanny's I had to go through a Safety Equipment retailer. Does anyone have an idea on how Swanny's filter can be replaced with making a new tub every couple of months sine these filter on last a month when not place in an airtight bag when not in use?

Snoopy

I have made small changes to the configuration. You mentioned that the cartridge was looked as if on the outside and it was. I was told that the filter itself is not directional and flow through it is controlled by valves in the respirator. But just in case I decided to mount it inside so the flow of “bad” air is through the filter is if it were being worn. These cartridges are available at Home Depot or Lowe’s.

Pic 1 is the inside and the glopped on silicone seals around the cartridge. Going for seal here not looks.

Pic 2 is a few screws hold it in place.

Wing_nut - That looks pretty cool. I hope SWanny does not mind the mods. I like them actually. I will stop by Home Depot or Lowes after work and maybe even stop by a grocery store to get a coffee can. I do not drink coffee so I will have to think of something to do with the coffee. Thanks for the clear pics.
