Yesterday, I was browsing through an issue of FSM from the year 2000, and I came across this ad for a compressor that was "super silent", a little less than 50decibles. Naturally, I had to go to my science encyclopedia to look it up. so in a sound chart across 50db. I find a person shouting with his face all red and purple. to make sure, I read the caption and it said shouting. Super silent?
HA! yeah, you have the "super silent" air compressor and you would go through a 20-30 min painting session with a person shouting in your ear with out going insane? tha was the last straw, so I built a simple silencer.
I poked around the house for a small container that would fit my compressor, a Testors Mighty Mini. I found a .50 cal ammo can that I had bought for 8 bucks at an airshow so I took it to my workshop and did the following operations:
1) lined the walls with old clothes, towels, etc.
2)put in my compressor with the cord hanging out of the opening.
since my compressor looks like a box, I put it on its side.
3) screwed in the a/b hose
4) cover assembly with another towel
5)shut lid of ammo can. the hoses and cords shoud be together and hanging out where there are no lid lips (will post pics soon for clarity)
expectations soaring, I turned it on and voila (can't find accent marks!)! my roaring monster was a purring cat. Try it! it really does help. as for the tube beng constricted from the lid, it is no problem. the electrical cord "lifts" the lid just enough to let air in and right back out the hose freely.
Proof of success: when I asked my mom if she had heard me spraying, she said no and said "what spraying?" either she was kidding or my project was a success!
I might wanna submit this to FSM reader tips!
