New tools
Posted by knight667 on Thursday, November 17, 2005 5:49 PM
Just picked up 4 tools from my dentist.  Yup, that's right.  I asked after I had my teeth cleaned last week, and the hygenist gave me some of their old tools that they can't retip, so they basically just throw them away.  Yay!  Not sure what I'll do with them, but panel scribing came to mind, since (as we all know) those buggers are sharp!

I'm gonna have to ask for some but I KNOW I'm gonna get the wierdest look from my dentist when I do.  What the heck!  I'll make sure to give 'em a good wash first...  On this same note, as an M.D. I have a few surgical tools that I initially used to practice suturing that are now model tools.  Forceps, clamps, hemostats, scalpels, etc.  All great for models - the one exception perhaps being a scalpel because they are so darn sharp one slip and oh no there goes a digit Big Smile [:D]

My dental hygenist knows I'm a modeler, so she was prepared when I asked. :)

Dental Tools can be the raw material of even better tools.  I took one that had a blob of metal on t he end - not sure what they use it for, pretty sure I don't want to know - and using a Dremel Wheel, shaped it into a right angle scraper for getting crisp inside edges where paint tends to build up.  You just drag and scrape the tool in the corner, and the radius of paint or glue is shaved out.

Use your imagination a bit, making tools is sometimes more fun than building models LOL

My dentist is going to swap me some for a finished model for the kid's room. Now I actually have to finish a kit!

So long folks!

Everytime I see this link it also reminds me that I need to go to the dentist.  I hate the friggin dentist.  Nothing personal.  At least now I have some incentive to go!  Maybe I'll leave with less teeth and more fillings but plus a couple of potential tools Clown [:o)]

So, do you ever find your self feeling like the person you are working on in a stressful situation is more like a model than a pateint? I mean "Hey Doc, why did you just say my rear stabilizer flap was broken and we would have to get some plastic glue to fix that one"?Big Smile [:D]

Yup - you know, it might seem weird, but sometimes the two things do seem a little similar.  I think that's one of the reasons I got back into modeling and like it so much.  Great to work with the hands, but with models its nice because you can work at your own pace, not at the obscene pace that many MDs try and work at these days in order to see a certain number of patients per hour.  Personally, I bailed out of clinical medicine for that very reason.  Also, there just wasn't enough time left for modeling!  Have a good one!  Big Smile [:D]
