                        I find myself needing a countour gauge for a project I'm working on.

                        I looked at some general-purpose ones at a woodworking store, but they seemed a little coarse to me.

                        Are there better ones on the market for plastic modeling, or should I just live with a woodworking model?

                        Hhhmmm... I'd like to know the answer to this myself. I've often thought a fine contour gauge would be handy.

                        I eventually decided on a MicroMark unit.  I dunno if it's any better than the other units, but I decided to bank on their reputation.

                        The only other one that seemed interesting was a Japanese model.  It's a little more expensive, but might be better.  I dunno.  Here's a link to the Shinwa Contour Gauge.

                        the shinwa guage looks very similar to a contour guage that you would get at a wood working store/dept.
                        Staley offers one that is just as nice and works just as well.

                        3d modelling is an option a true mental excercise in frusrtation

                        I picked up my contour gauge at the local hardware store when they were on sale. It is a generic wood working type and it works great. I have used it for cutting bulkheads for aircraft and for armour interior detailing. They each work the same. I protect the piece I am working on by using a piece of masking tape.
