Magnifying lenses/equipment. Your opinion?
Posted by echolmberg on Wednesday, January 11, 2006 1:59 PM

Hi everyone!  I've been thinking about getting some sort of magnifying lense to help me when I'm working on real tiny parts (ex. painting small figurines, instrument panels, etc).  I've been looking at either the kind you wear like a pair of eye glasses with the mini-lights up by the temple or the one which is a big magnifying lense on the articulating arm with the built in light.  My dad, bless his heart, got me a small lense which I have mounted on my workbench but it's sort of small so the stereoscopic vision isn't the best.  I'd like to have one which can still give me some fairly good depth perception.  Does anyone have any thoughts on this?  What kind do you have?  What do you like/dislike about it?

Thank you!!!!

We had a good discussion of this topic recently in a thread labeled "Need magnification suggestions."  I've moved it to the head of the line; it should appear just below this one.

The solution to the problem varies with the individual.  My left and right eyes are 55 years old, and they've aged differently; without my glasses I have trouble getting both to focus simultaneously on anything within about two feet.  "Optivisor"-type magnifiers don't work well for me.  The best solution for me is a pair of flip-down magnifying lenses, which I can fasten to my regular glasses.  But people with different kinds of vision problems need different solutions.

There are plenty of options out there.  It's worth taking a look at several.  Good luck.

Youth, talent, hard work, and enthusiasm are no match for old age and treachery.

John,

Thank you for bringing that chat string up!  It's some good information.  I'm going to look through it right now.

For a "cost no object, damn the auditors" magnification system go here http://smtinspection.com/mantis_detail.htm

Otherwise, cheap drugstore reading glasses (magnification up to 3X) run under $10.  I prefer my trusty 20-year old Optivisor, but these new LED illuminated gizmos are sure interesting:
