Need Help with New Supplies
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, September 8, 2006 7:27 PM

I'm a 'born again' modeller thanks to the help of the kind and generous dkmacin.  Thanks dk!  As I stated in the Welcome Forum I modelled as a child but got too busy up until now.  I just graduated college and I'm in the Air Force in Missouri while all of my 'supplies' are back in Pennsylvania (which consists of a hobby knife, some sandpaper from my mom, paper clips, and an the only really useful thing: an airbrush and compressor).

Due to this fact and because I never really had any money to spend on true tools, I'm starting anew other than the airbrush (for now).  I've perused the forums and have come up with a makeshift list of what I need.

I mainly do military aircraft, but I will most likely transition into tanks and some ships later on in my 'career', so I should just need tools for that right now (no figures or cars).  Maybe some scrathbuilding later on...

Anyway, the information I would great appreciate is where I can find most of these tools (online mainly, there's a very small hobby shop near me), which ones to get (Wal-Mart, Testors, who-knows-what-else), and anything else that I missed in the list.  Here is what I have come up with:

1.  Hobby Knife: How many different blades should I get, because I saw a set at the hobby shop with 20 or more for $40-50!

2. Tweezers:  How many and what kind do I need?

3.  Side/Wire Cutters:  Again, how many and which ones?

4.  Mini Files:  Are these sanding files?  Not a clue what they are

5.  Flexi-Files:  Huh?!

6.  Mini-Drill and bits:  What for and where can I find one?

7. Punch & Die sets:  Who is going to die from these?!  (in other words what are they?)

8.  Clamps:  Which ones are sensitive enough for models?

9.  Sanding Bands, sticks, disc, and paper:  There's more than sandpaper?!

10.  Scriber:  How many do I need?

11.  Weights:  What do most people use for this?  Actual weights or homemade things?

12.  Dremel:  What?! Modellers use this?

13.  Putty & Spreader:  What kind?

14.  Seam Scraper:  Huh?  Is this another word for a scriber?

15.  Tape:  I bought Parafilm M a few years back, is that still good?

16.  Calipers and rulers:  Do I have to get THAT precise?

17. Paint!  Which is the 'best' (most preferred I guess) or what would you advise?

18.  Brushes:  How many different kinds, what size, and which kinds (A.C. Moore or Testors)?

19.  Home Items:  Cocktail sticks, toothpicks, masking and scotch tape, nail clippers and files, clothespins, chip-bag holders, rubber bands, scissors, cotton swabs.  Anything else?

20.  Self Sealing Cutting Mat:  I only have a glass computer desk, so I need to get something!

PHEW!  That's a lot of things!  Oh yeah, I use Testors liquid glue in the little black container, and I read Elmer's is good for windows and such.  Is super glue needed?

So mainly I'm asking what everyone has, and what they prefer and/or advise.  I don't mind cost (to an extent) but if I can get the same quality at Wal-Mart, I'd prefer that one obviously.  So I'm looking to totally revamp my supplies to get everything needed for hard-core modelling, not just a for a starter.  Sorry for the long laundry list but I need some help!!  And if someone REALLY wants to go all out you can tell me what you use them for (at least the ones I have no clue about)!

Thank you so much and I look forward to starting this amazing hobby again.  THANK YOU!

1.  Hobby Knife: How many different blades should I get, because I saw a set at the hobby shop with 20 or more for $40-50!

I would go with 1, maybe 2. I would go with a #11 blade and one that is good for cutting radiuses

2. Tweezers:  How many and what kind do I need?

I have a big pair with blunt ends and a smaller pair with sharp ends. They pretty much cover my needs.

3.  Side/Wire Cutters:  Again, how many and which ones?

I have a pair of the Xuron sprue nippers. They are quite handy and should last.

4.  Mini Files:  Are these sanding files?  Not a clue what they are

Generally no, they are used for removing material quickly, you may have to use putty over the top of whatever you removed to clean it up.

5.  Flexi-Files:  Huh?!

Small, soft sanding pads that are easily contoured to diffrent shapes.

6.  Mini-Drill and bits:  What for and where can I find one?

Check out the LHS or www.squadron.com  For drilling mini holes

7. Punch & Die sets:  Who is going to die from these?!  (in other words what are they?)

I have no idea what they are for, I do know they are expensive and I don't think I have ever needed them?

8.  Clamps:  Which ones are sensitive enough for models?

I bought a bag of 100 clothes pins for $3 at walmart. they work perfect for just about everything.

9.  Sanding Bands, sticks, disc, and paper:  There's more than sandpaper?!

Flexi-File = sanding stick Soft sanding blocks can be nice to have around to

10.  Scriber:  How many do I need?

Just 1

11.  Weights:  What do most people use for this?  Actual weights or homemade things?

??? Try fishing sinkers, they are already weighed for you.

12.  Dremel:  What?! Modellers use this?

Some, I can't speak from experiance. < I can't seem to speak at all Big Smile [:D]

13.  Putty & Spreader:  What kind?

Cheap artist knives work well, and I use Squadron white putty.

14.  Seam Scraper:  Huh?  Is this another word for a scriber?

Not really, it works on the same principal, but you can do the same thing with a sanding stick

15.  Tape:  I bought Parafilm M a few years back, is that still good?

 Beats me Big Smile [:D]

16.  Calipers and rulers:  Do I have to get THAT precise?

No, have fun, you may want to later, but I don't own anything more than a ruler, and I don't hardly use that!

17. Paint!  Which is the 'best' (most preferred I guess) or what would you advise?

I like Model Master Enamels, but try a few diffrent kinds to find the one that works for you.

18.  Brushes:  How many different kinds, what size, and which kinds (A.C. Moore or Testors)?

I use cheap ones from walmart. They are the upscale brand, but still cheap, and they last to!

19.  Home Items:  Cocktail sticks, toothpicks, masking and scotch tape, nail clippers and files, clothespins, chip-bag holders, rubber bands, scissors, cotton swabs.  Anything else?

Pipe cleaners, I try to keep some of those around.

20.  Self Sealing Cutting Mat:  I only have a glass computer desk, so I need to get something!

If you have a Hobby Lobby, you can get generic ones there for a decent price.

Good luck ShigginMan! Oh, and I buy most of my stuff at www.hobbylinc.com

DrewH and eizzle:  Thanks for the help!  I'm almost done choosing all of my supplies to start up the hobby again.

M1:  I'll check out some local stores for some more things.  Thanks!

Dubau: Montrose, PA.  Alllll the way north of you (I checked on the map) about an hour north of Scranton, 30 min south of Binghamton, NY.  Just take 81 and you'll pass my hometown.  Small and comfy, that's how I like 'em.  The only problem with that is I need to shop online for model supplies.  I hope shipping is fast!!!!  *bites nails*

I have had the best experiance with USPS Priority for shipping. Where I shop at most, www.hobbylinc.com They ship in about 3 or 4 days, and I almost always get my package in 2, and thats from GA! You would probably be looking at 3, maybe. Its a great store, but they don't have a lot of the detail parts you might want to get into, for those I got to www.squadron.com They ship pretty fast, and there prices are decent. Good luck!
