reusable syringes for paint/thinner mixing?
Posted by bcamp1973 on Monday, January 8, 2007 5:54 PM
when i was in high school my mom had access to disposable syringes from work (nurse) that i would use for measuring paint/thinner and applying glue etc. It was pretty handy. Well, i'm no longer in high school and mom is retired and I'm finally building models again...so, wondering if any of you can recommend a good supplier of *reuseable* glass syringes that won't get eaten up by enamel paint thinner? unless of course you have a better solution, I'm all ears :)

Glass-lined metal bodied syringes are use by Vetrenarians and ranchers for inoculating animals.  They're reusable; otherwise, they'd be going through a fortune in disposibles.  Check a local ranch supply house or a vet.

Many Drug Stores sell glass pipettes that you can use for mixing paint.   If you live in the midwest Walgreens sells packs of 2 for about a $1.00.  Thats what I use.

There are reasonably reliable plastic syringes (Not medical grade) available at various Jerry's Artarama stores:  http://www.jerrysartarama.com , expressly designed for the purpose of mixing paints and solvents. I've found them useful and inexpensive. In addition, they serve nicely for creating improvised spatter effects when loaded with Tamiya Acrylics.

I have a senile, 15-year-old cat, named Willie, who has a thyroid condition. One of the medications I have to give him is in the form of an ointment that's applied, in small amounts, to (oddly enough) the insides of his ears. I have to buy it at a "compounding pharmacy," which mixes its own medicines. The stuff comes in skinny, plastic syringes, with markings in fractions of an ounce and tenths of a cc on the side. A month's supply (which costs about $25) includes five such syringes full of the stuff. Rinsed out, those syringes are great for mixing paint, applying (non-solvent) glue, etc. I imagine well-stocked drugstores sell them, empty, for low prices.

You might give these a try. I have them and they work really well, from American Scientific Surplus:

I found Monoject medical grade syringes without the needle at a vet supply place online-www.kvvet.com.  Depending on which you want you can get them as low as 19 cents a piece.

Try a glass eyedropper?  Less than a buck, and you can take it apart and clean it (until the rubber head goes bad from the chemicals).  If you are really careful, you'll never get thinner up into the bulb head, and you're golden.
