The higher the grit number, the finer the grit. So 120 is very rough and 1200 is fine and 12000 is for polishing.
Be aware that grit numbers in europe an the US can differ, there are two standards. So when somebody tells you they use 600 grit for a certain task it depends on wheter they are in Europe or the US how fine that grit really is.
I've got sanding sticks with numbers like 150 grit, 320 grit, 600 grit, etc. and others with numbers like 2400 grit, 3600 grit, 4000, 6000, 12000, etc.. Probably a dumb question, but what's the difference? Is 600 grit the same as 6000 grit?
