Aircraft guys might find this handy...

Saw something on my wife's workbench and it gave me an idea, so I tried it and it worked great. I masked the edges of the fuselage halves with liquid frisket film (applied with a toothpick as this stuff is almost impossible to clean from a brush) prior to doing any painting on the fuselage interior walls. It was a snap to apply a bead that ran only across the surfaces that are to be joined and nowhere else, and when painting was done, I simply peeled it off and was left with nice clean edges that could easily be joined with liquid cement. It was much faster to apply than masking tape, is so easy to apply because of its initial consistancy (as thin as water), dries quickly, is just as easy to remove, and IMO did a better masking job than tape or rubber cement could. I imagine that most craft stores would carry the stuff.

That sounds like something to try! Does it go by the name Liquid Frisket Film? Or is it labelled as something else? I'll look for the stuff the next time i'm in Micheals

Warmest regards,

Roger

Hey Roger! It goes by the name Miskit Liquid Frisket and it's made by Grumbacher. Comes in a 35 ml jar. I just used some on the edges of an interior bulkhead and it worked just as good as it did on the fuselage edges. I noticed also that, even on an edge as thin as a bulkhead, it stays right on the edge and does not overlap onto any perpendicular surfaces, so the paint will go exactly where it should and nowhere else. No more hassles about finding just the right width tape for those surfaces. I'll never scrape paint again! Thumbs Up [tup]

I can't say I've ever used the liquid but I've got regular frisket film here that you can get at Michaels, or Blick art or . . . snazzy stuff. I'm thinking of trying to use it to paint decals rather than use the actual decals. Well, it'll work on the larger pieces.

Be very careful that if you are using the Humbrol purple liquid masking agent, that you do not use this over the top of Future in any way.  It will strip it.  It is a cellulose-based masking liquid.

I think it's actually ammonia based (it smells like ammonia). You are right that it should not be used over Future, since this is and acryllic coat. Maskol (that's the name) can't be used over any acrylic paint, the ammonia will attack the acryllic coat.

I think it is both ammonia-based (per the smell) and cellulose-based (per the label). Wink [;)]

I've labeled my bottle with a big marker (DO NOT USE OVER FUTURE!

Frisket is a low tack masking medium used for airbrushing. It's available in sheets at art stores, or online from Dixie Art or the like. It's better for flat surfaces, but some are so thin they can take gentle bends.
