In my storage barn I still have my Mattel "vac-u-form" from the early 60's. Two years ago I plugged it in and it still got hot. Can these be used to make parts?

Your Mattel Vacuformer should work if the vacuum part is good.  The only thing you could do is try it to see if it works.

It's pretty easy and cheap to make your own vac-forming machine.  Here is an article I wrote about it.

Many many many moons ago....say..um...1985ish...FSM had an excellent article on building your own vac former.  It was really heavy duty.  I had the issue through the mid 90's.  I dont know what happened to it since then.  I think its in a storage box at my parents.

If you need it for small bits, you can easily make one yourself with nothing else than a box and some ply sheets, if you're looking for a serious machine (that takes up the space of a cupboard), pm me for the plans, it involves a build-in heater and suction-unit.
