Cheap Sprue Cutter $3.50
Posted by Fustercluck on Tuesday, October 23, 2007 5:59 PM

I found these while surfing this site.

If you dont have a pair already, you should really order one.  I have used this site before, they are a reputable company out of Hong Kong, so it takes a couple of weeks to ship.

Enjoy

What is the diffrence between sprue cutter and a side cutter (used in electronics)? I have been using side cutters all the time.

A good sprue cutter has a jaw that doesn't compress the part while cutting. This is done by less material and angle on the jaw. The compression creates stress tears which can damage the part. Hence sprue cutters are for sprue not removing parts, though most of us do it anyway. See my tip. Side cutters used by electricians crush the wire and cut. Sprue cutters tend to be sharper since the material they are used for is soft. Never use sprue cutters for trimming or cutting piano wire or hard brass/copper either. That will ruin a good cutter fast. Much like a seamstress will never cut paper with their shears, only fabric. Keeps the edge sharper longer, so it doesn't tear at the fibers. Cheap tools tend not to last as long and dull quicker because of the materials they are made of.

I knew something was wrong when I saw $3.50...I have yet to get a good pair of sprue cutters, so I don't know if they're really worth the $8-10.

Xuron makes the best ones. I'm working up a new design with them as we speak. Smile [:)] I'll keep you informed.

I use these:

And these:

They are not cheap but they do an excellent job.

Thats the plan once we get the new design into production. It may take a month or two. Hopefully a new release out of the gate for 2008.

Thanks for the info,

Now I got a sprue cutter, I got a Tamiya spruecutter as the LHS had two models a Italieri and a Tamiya on. The price was not cheap but I hope the cutter will last a long time.

I havent had time to test the cutter yet but looking at the cutting surface it looks much different to the normal side cutter.

I use a Xuron, 2 ytyps of nail cutters and an excato.

The blue nail cutter have a straight edge and is by far one of the most useful tools on my table.

More pics of it in use HERE

No good ones I have seen are cheap. The ones I see, Squadron and Xuron, are both about $9-10, which I think is rediculous when I buy wire cutters for $3-4. I know, they are hobby-specific and have thinner blades and they're just "better".
