B-17 walk around or Detail & Scale books?
Posted by echolmberg on Friday, May 8, 2009 10:48 AM

Hi guys!

I've been searching all over and I can't find any B-17 Walk Around or Deatil & Scale books.  Do these even exist?  I've got the visible B-17 in my stash that I'd really like to tackle but I'd like to have some good reference photos to work off of.  I can find tons of cockpit photos on the 'net but nothing like the kinds of photos you get from the D&S books.

I don't know how much I can trust some of the restored B-17s that you see on the internet.  I never know how much is original vs modern add-ons.  That's why I'd much rather have period photos as opposed to modern photos.

Thanks!

Eric

Hmmm.  I have several resource books, including the Walk Around and Detail and Scale.

Here is what is in my library and hopefully this will help you find them.  Look at Great Models Webstore and of course Squadron.  I also hit my club's local show and the used book vendors who are there every year.

The first three of the books below are my 'go to' pubs whenever I build a B-17

Walk Around B-17 - by Drendel  Squadron/Signal Publishing  number 16

Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress -Warbird Tech Series Volume 7, Frederick Johnsen

B-17 Flying Fortress - in Detail and Scale volu 2.  Alwyn Lloyd and Terry Moore

Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress - Ospery Aviation Production Line to Frontline Michael O'Leary

B-17 Flying Fortress - Warbird History William Hess

and I have 3 other picture books of the planes but less useful for modeling.

Hope this helps!

Chris,

That is amazing!  Thank you for that great list!  And I completely forgot about the Warbird Tech series.  I have one of those for the P-61 (aka the greatest plane ever built by the hand of man) and it definitely is chock full of detail shots.

I checked Squadron for the books and, while they do have a ton of them, they didn't have a single one listed for the B-17 Walk Around nor the In Action nor the D&S lline of books.  I forgot about Great Models.  I'm going to check them out right now.

Again, thank you for the great info!!!!

Happy to help!  Good luck and I hope you find the books.  I'd love to find a visible B-17!  CN

echolmberg, there was a site some time ago where someone had uploaded PDFs of the majority of Squadron's "In Action" books, and I think a few "Walk Arounds." I know I downloaded quite a few of them back then. I will check my CDs to see if I have the one(s) for the B-17.

BLESS YOU, JAGDWOLF!!!!  I had never heard of a site like that.  I was on Amazon.com about an hour or two ago looking for several B-17 books.  I think it was the warbirds tech series that had an offering for the B-17.  The prices started at around $18 and went as high as into the $90 range!  I'm wondering if they're just out of print which is making them so hard to find.  I just thought I'd have a little easier time finding good, detailed publications on the most famous bomber of WW2.

And on a side note, good luck trying to find any good pictures of the bombardier section of the B-26 Marauder!  As Frank Sinatra once said "..it's just impossible."  I think he wrote the song while trying to find reference material about the B-26 also.

If you get really stuck and just can't find the books I can loan you mine.  I'm not planning on building another B-17 for a while.  Fun, but a LOT of work with that huge interior.

echolmberg, I found those PDFs on Squadron/Signal's B-17 in Action and B-17 Walk Around, plus B-26 Marauder In Action.

By the way, you should check out http://www.aircraftresourcecenter.com/ and in particular the 'Walkaround' page.  There are multiple B-17's including G's with LOTS of interior pics, really good ones too.  You'll have to just click on all the links to find the various pics as there are not separate URL's for each one, but they are good references.

You realize that you HAVE to post pics of your WIP right?  :-)

Hi Eric,

I just finished my "visible B-17". It took me over a year but I detailed it using Eduard, True Details and plenty of scratch built parts. A good book to get is the B-17 Walk through by Verlinden. I believe that i may have gotten it from Squadron Models but I could be wrong. If not google the title B-17 by Verlinden. It covers everything from the nose to the tail with excellent color detail photos of every detail imaginable. This was the best reference that i used but you can google B-17 ball turret, bomb bay etc,etc and get plenty of pictures to refer to. There are plenty of pictures and reference material on line.

Blackbelt2, any chance we can see some pictures of your B-17?  I opened up a standard B-17 and did the interior so I'd really like to see what you did.  LOTS of good work to be done inside one of these giants!

 All the best,  Chris

I hope to be able to do so soon. I am in the middle of making the base for the model. By the way the book I told you about is B-17G by Willy Peters and is part of the Verlinden series #24.Good luck with your build!
