I was looking to buy the decal set mentioned above for my JU 52 model I already own. My question is, what did this plane do?  I believe it to be a transport, which would make it perfect for my diorama, but I want to be sure.  Thanx!

It was a transport used by the Germans, which was the German (somewhat) equivalent of the US C-47.  Check out wikipedia.org for more info.

As richs26 pointed out, it was used pretty much as the C-47 - transport of material and also to carry and drop  paratroops.

I've also seen pictures of a JU-52 fitted with a huge circular horizontal antenna - I believe it was for detecting the magnetic field of submarines, but that's just a guess.  It would make a neat modeling subject, though.

Actually, it turns out it was for marine mine detection.

They were also used as glider tugs, as well as being fitted with floats and/or skis.

Pretty versatile airplane, actually.

What company makes the decal set? I would be concerned about their accuracy, because as of May 1943, all of Africa was in Allied hands. Any Ju-52s in Africa during July 43 would have been derelict or captured.

It probably is a survivor of the Palm Sunday Massacare that is on Sicily, at this time.  The Germans wouldn't have repainted it from its North African paint scheme I wouldn't think.

It's PeddingHaus, from Germany.

The unit referred to apparently retained the "Afrika" designation until later in 1943 because it had been stationed there.

I've not been able to find any reference pictures, and still am not sure what "Flugdo." means.

Ln.Regt (mot) Afrika  refers to Luftnachrichten Regiment (motorized) Afrika, which apparently was part of or became Ln.Regt 2.

reference:  "9./Ln.Rgt.2 was reformed in 10.43 from 9./Ln.Rgt. Afrika."  from the website:

http://www.ww2.dk/ground/ln/ln2.html

Luftnachrichten means Air Intelligence/Signals, which goes a long way to describe the lightning bolt.
