USN pre-war Camo Experiment
Posted by hawkeye2an_L-Bird_fan on Friday, March 19, 2010 11:53 PM

Just ran across some photos of Buffalo and TBD in Experimental camo schemes from 1940. I am very familiar with the well documented Air Corps water-based schemes from the same time period, but this is a new one for me.

Can anybody direct me to references with colors?

http://www.amazon.com/Official-Monogram-Marine-Corps-Aircraft/dp/0914144324

The Official Monogram U.S. Navy and Marine Corps Aircraft Color Guide, Vol 2: 1940-1949 Pages 15—18.  It's pricey, but perhaps a local library or a modeler friend close by has it.

The section includes nine photographs and 1 patent sketch. The specific colors are not listed, but described in the text.  The undersides were painted in pairs of light and brilliant colors, such as bright blue and white.  Upper surfaces were darker colors, such as deep blue and dark gray.  The sides were intermediate, as in neutral shades of blue and gray.

Other colors suggested for further investigation were Gray, Silver Gray, Blue and Green.

The camouflage schemes were tested on two Brewster F2A-2's, two Northrop BT-1's, two Vought SB2U-1's, two Douglas TBD-1's, and one Vought O3U-3.

That's some good research.  Hope you'll post pictures of the finished models.

Regards,
Bruce

Just spotted this, love that camo on the Buffalo. That could be a show-stopper!
