I think this is what you're looking for. USS Wasp served for awhile in the Med in mid 1942 before being sent to the Pacific to participate in the Guadalcanal operations. In the Med, a yellow surround was added to the national insignia as part of theater recognition markings. These were painted out, and not neatly, when she arrived in the Pacific. This photo was taken on the day of the landings at Guadalcanal on board USS Wasp.
