Help me find an old FSM article
Posted by RadBat-25 on Sunday, February 11, 2024 1:58 PM

I'm looking for a two-page(?) spread, possibly from April Fools day, possibly from 10-ish years back, where a diorama of US WW2 bomber was being painted with pre-shaded panel lines by ground-crew figures the way models are done.  A fake memo from somebody was part of the article and described the pre-shading process with military formality, as if this were a real procedure.  Overall the short article was there to emphasize that preshading etc. is mainly done for cosmetic purposes and despite its inaccuracy.  Quite memorable.

Interested in finding this article in whatever format(s) possible.

I remember such an article, but it was much older than 10 years ago. But the way that I remember, it was with with a USAAF fighter,  possibly a P-47. I'd put it as perhaps published as sometime in the 90's.

Maybe it was a fighter, but I vaguely remember it being green.  If it was the 90s, then it would likely be the late 90s.  I didn't read FSM earlier than that.

Funny - I was looking for that image recently.  No luck, but I hope it shows up hear.  It was a great spread/dig on the heavy panel line shading.

Thanks,

John

Maybe an FSM staffer remembers the article?

*looks around*

Any FSM people reading this?

Hi everyone! I asked Aaron Skinner about this and he looked through issue archives and found it in the April 2005 issue on page 18. The article is by Paul Boyer about a diorama made by Tory Mucaro and Pat Hawkey that features a P-47. Hope this helps!

I used to have every issue going back to 1982-2017, but finally got rid of them when I moved.I had them in binders and used to flip thru them while on the stationary bike
