UPDATE July 5, 2004: Free US Aircraft Insignia 1921 thru 1947 graphics
Posted by Quagmyre on Monday, May 10, 2004 6:16 PM
This file is the result of an effort to create US insignia backups since a number of the decals from the kits I worked with this past year were of less than ideal quality and often split, shreded, or crumbled. Maybe I'm too rough? Big Smile [:D]

Anyway, the zip file below contains US aircraft insignia in PNG format from 1921 through 1947. Not included are low-viz insignia since those are out of scope for my building purposes, but anyone with a good amount of Photoshop experience could manifest those from some of these PNGs. I used FS 595b colors based on color conversion charts like the ones posted by BlackWolf in his reference listings (converted to RGB in Photoshop, and thus Photoshop did the RGB to CMYK conversion automatically). This is about as close as it gets by rudimentary means(technical term for Home PC). Note that if you do not have an Alps Printer (like who really does?) to get the appropriate shade of Insignia White you will have to print these on white decal paper. Below are the converted FS colors used.

Insignia Red FS31136
Insignia White FS17875
Insignia Blue FS35044
Dark Sea Blue FS15042
Insignia Yellow FS33538

These graphics are interlaced, but still use and scale at your own risk. Test on regular paper first.

Included US Insignias:
1921 - Aug 1942
Star Only Aug 1942 - June 1943
Sept 1943 - 1947
Battle Of Midway (Blue Dot)
Red Border June 1942 - Sept 1943
Operation Torch Oct 1942 (Yellow ring)
SeaBlue (Navy star and bars only version)
1947 (post WWII)
YellowBars (Used by Marines)

I recently updated a few of these insignia (Midnight July 5th 2004) because the bars and borders just weren't aligned right. Things should be much more accurate now.

No problem. If there's enough interest, and it continues to rain keeping me off the golf course, I might just create those low-viz insignias after all.

Who knows, maybe RAF Roundels and other country's insignia are on the horizon. Wink [;)]
