Need info on Col. George Laven's aircraft models
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, August 1, 2004 2:37 PM

I am not a modeler, but am interested in finding kits of my uncle's aircraft. There was a Revell kit, I think, long ago of his P-38 and I just read a review of the new Trumpeter Lightning kit (in the most recent FM mag) that has a decal kit of his Itsy Bitsy II, and I read a review here of his F-104C by Hasegawa, but I was wondering if there are even more out there. I heard from my dad (George's brother) that his planes were often quite colorful. He flew P-38, F-104, and the F-4.

cc's offlist would be appreciated to wmlaven@platinotype.com

Any other info on Butz (his nickname) would be appreciated.
Thanks, Bill

There are a number of aftermarket sheets for Col. Lavin's planes. That's how I am familiar with him, for once you have seen one, you don't forget it. If you want to collect replicas of his aircraft, I would suggest buying the best kits and using aftermarket decals, which are easy to obtain. If you are shaky about your modeling, you won't have trouble finding someone around here to do it. In Squadron/Signal Publications' "F-104 in Action," there is a photo of Col. Lavin standing in front of a new (about 1961) Buick wagon, which is parked in front of his personal F-104. I remember having a 1/72 Superscale decal sheet of this plane, which carried the words "Really, George!" on one side. There is also an old 1/32 scale F-104 kit by Hasegawa in these red, green and yellow colors, but I imagine it's hard to find now. Good luck.
