Need references for the B-17 Gunship, the YB-40!
Posted by shrikes on Monday, October 18, 2004 12:43 AM
Hey, fellas! I'm going to start on my first long term project, a kit bashed 1/72 YB-40. I could use all the help you guys can give me, so if you know of a site that talks about the YB-40, let me know. I doesn't necissarily have to contain pictures, although that would be great.

If you guys have any books, magazine articles that you can recomend to me let me know! I already have:
1. Squadron's B-17 in action
2. Warbird Tech's B-17 Flying fortress
3. Finescale Modeling May 2003

Oh, and I need a nice 3-view line drawing too!!

Thanks in advance for any help! Big Smile [:D]

After a quick google search, I found these links:

http://home.att.net/~jbaugher2/b17_12.html
http://www.daveswarbirds.com/usplanes/aircraft/yb-40.htm
http://www.70thhistoricalsociety.org/b17/Modifications/yb40.htm
http://aeroweb.brooklyn.cuny.edu/specs/boeing/yb-40.htm
http://www.wpafb.af.mil/museum/research/bombers/b3-89.htm

To find more just type YB-40 into the google search.
hope this helps.

Thanks, nkm! I knew i could count on you! It's good that there's another B-17 fanatic in the Philippines! how's your project going? It's the memphis belle with the correct window placement, right?

I'm thinking about building this ship:

But i can't get a good picture of it or its serial number... and then there's the matter of how to make the decals... Big Smile [:D]

Allan has graciously agreed to help me in scratchbuilding and modifying certain parts... so i'm going to drop the flaps, ailerons and elevators, open the hatches, and maybe even remove the cowl on one of the engines... What else can i do a parked YB-40? I don't think i want to do battle damage just yet... Big Smile [:D]

Well I'll be. Looks like what I've got you have already except for one picture showing a side-view of th YB-40 from a B-17 magazine. I'll bring it next meeting.

With regards to decals, I think Tony is the man to talk to.

Parked YB-40, how about opening the ball turret (Man, at 1/72, it's gonna be tough but you can do it.

About my Memphis Belle, I've not started yet with the nose surgery.
