Ardennes offensive 1944, SS s.Pz.Abt. 501 + 101st US airborne.

I'm planning on build a small diorama with a few german and a few us vehicles and soldiers.
I know the SS s.Pz.Abt 501 was in the area (Tiger II), and from what I've found in various books, several fallschirmjäger units was in the area too, so that accounts for the germans. The 101st airborne was also in the area, but I want a few US vehicle too. What kind of vehicles did the 101st use, apart from standard trucks. Did they use the M8 6x6 ??

Any references/images/books on the subject?

regards,
Steen

I'm flipping through my "Battle of the Bulge" book and have seen the following...jeeps, ambulances, bulldozers, M8 Greyhounds, 6X6 GMC trucks, and halftracks. Most of the vehicles belonged to combat engineers, who were there before the fighting broke out. Hope this helps a little.Approve [^]

Thank you!

Then I'll just have to find out which combat engineer units they belonged to, so I can get the M8 Greyhound right too!

We danes have to stick together. I can't help you with the american stuff, but anything you'd like to know about Tigers ..... just ask, I got 16 books about them so I might be able to answer a question or 2. Hope to see you in Denmarks largest modeling show / competion Esbjerg open in November 2005.

Thank you TMN1, I might just take you up on that. After the Ardennes dio, I think I'm going to build a "transport" dio. I have this picture (in my head), of 2 or 3 Tiger I's on heavy train wagons, but I lack information about the Tiger's transport tracks, and think I have to scratch build them for 1/72 scale.

regards,
Steen

- I don't think I'll be "back in business" with anything presentable in 2005, but I might just show up anyway!

json,

Unfortunately, my copy of Rendezvous with Destiny has gone missing, but what I remember was that the 101 was resting and refitting at Mourmelon when the order came to go to Bastogne, and any means of transport available was pressed into service, without distinction of who the equipment originally belonged to. Then once in and around Bastogne, there were so many units attached, in such an ad hoc manner, and so much abandonned equipment recovered and pressed into use, you could probably get away with using almost any vehicle in your diorama and reasonably defend its use.

I know for certain that of non-organic units there were a tank destroyer battalion (the 705, I believe, which used M-10s), at least 2 engineering bn's, an armored artillery bn (maybe the 755), the 771 and 969 field artillery bns (African-American troops) and others. Then there were remnants of other units ... Good luck with the dio.
