Michael Wittman's Tiger I's
Posted by cdawson on Tuesday, January 25, 2005 7:50 PM
Does anyone have a reference for the 2nd company of the 501 heavy tiger? What I'm looking for is the colors of the numbers on the tanks - 1st company was a white outine, 2nd company ? and 3rd company was blue number with a white outline. Finally, what was the number of the tiger that Wittman used on the initial assault on Villers-Bocage?

Personally, I go for 222, as does Jean Restayn, author of Tiger I on the Western Front, David Pentland, painter of my print of Counterattack at Viller's Bocage that hangs here over my desk, and Wolfgang Schneider, author of Tigers in Combat, Vols I and II. Others may state otherwise, but I have my doubts as to their credibility. Wittmann's normal mount would have been 205, but it was not serviceable on this day.

I completely agree.
