D-Day markings
Posted by dr soggy on Friday, January 28, 2005 1:04 PM
I need help finding info on the aircraft used on D-Day. I would like to build all the aircraft in the D-Day stripes, but I am having trouble finding good reference material and pictures. Also, were there any corsairs used in D-Day, or were those strickly used in the Pacific? Any help would be, well... helpful. Smile [:)]

thanks

Scott,
That is a tall order. First with the easy one. No Corsairs flew over Normandy. The British did have some in the Atlantic but one of the reasons Normandy was chosen was that it was within range of fighters based in England.

Ok, next was what planes flew on D-Day.
Deep breath...
P-38, P-47, P-51, B-25, B-26, A-20, B-17, B-24, L-4, C-47 for the US
Spitfire Mk VB,VII, VIII, IX, Mustang MkI, III, Typhoon, Tempest, Beaufighter, Mosquito, Boston, Albermarle, Mitchell, Dakota, Lancaster, Halifax, Stirling for the British
Gliders were Waco, Horsa and Hamilcar
and I am sure I have missed a few.
For pics, Blackwolf has a lot of pics on his site. Take a look around and I am sure you will find some http://etoclub.proboards18.com/index.cgi?board=wpfaircraft

Philip,

Thanks, that gives me a good start. It also saves me the headache of trying to find a pic of the corsair w/ d-day stripes.

Try looking at the July 2004 FSM. It has a section on the aircraft of D-Day and the kits that represent them.
